Description
Curious Sexual Adventure of Rev J PrinceĀ [As observed and reported by his scandalised neighbours of Totnes in 1699]
The event which was the talk of Totnes at the end of the seventeenth century: on an April evening in 1699 the former vicar scanalised the town’s inhabitants by his indiscretion in a private room in an alehouse with a young servant girl.
News quickly spread through Totnes and local people gathered on the High Street to peek through a broken pane of glass as the shocking events of the evening unfolded and their testimonies, which caused Mr Prince to be removed from his church, are printed here for the first time.
Saucy without being vulgar, the material introduces a new dimension to Reverend Prince, the author of The Worthies of Devon, one of the key books on the history of Devon. Was he the victim of a local conspiracy or merely a man caught with his trousers down? The reader decides.
