A collection of more than 100 illustrations, most of the previously unknown, tell the story of how Exeter has developed over the last 500 years.
A variety of forces have shaped Exeter over the last five centuries including war, fire and 'improvement'. One hundred and thirty-one drawings, paintings and photographs from local archives and libraries are used to illustrate how the city's buildings and streets have changed. Eight key areas of the city (Exe bridge, the Carfax, South Street, Goldsmith Street, Queen Street, Cathedral Close, Bedford Street and Eastgate) are examined. The majority of these images have never before been seen in public and are printed for the first time.
